“Social Development” Opens “From the Homeland” Bazaar in MIA Park

Her Excellency Mrs. Maryam Bint Ali bin Nasser Al-Misnad, Minister of Social Development and Family, inaugurated the exhibition of national productive projects, "Bazaar from the Homeland" during the holy month, Ramadan. It was held in the garden of the Museum of Islamic Art, which lasts for five days in cooperation with the Museum itself. This bazaar is divided between food products, local foods, textiles, and various handicrafts.

The “From the Homeland” initiative which emerged from Qatari homes aims for diversified production, tries to establish a culture of sustainability, transforms individuals from consumption to production, and develops the system of productive projects within Qatar. This was to enhance the efficiency of project owners in a way that it raises their productivity, and develops their skills, by providing integrated services that start from the process of producing ideas to facilitating access to markets. Besides, it also changes the stereotyped idea associated with local projects by launching this initiative under a new name and an attractive visual identity.

This initiative was launched at the first points of sale that were launched in conjunction with the launch of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. This was through the Msheireb exhibition, which focused on highlighting the aesthetics of Qatari products in a contemporary manner. Thus, it contributes to strengthening the identity, and introducing the current generation to the heritage of Qatari crafts. It seeks to integrate traditional designs of handicrafts and present them in a modern and contemporary way by a group of Qatari artists and designers in several artistic fields that include designs, fashion, jewelry, antiques, and accessories, in addition to Sadu textiles, as well as displaying valuable paintings.

Her Excellency Sheikha Bint Jassim Al-Thani, Assistant Undersecretary for Family Affairs at the Ministry of Social Development and Family, said on this occasion, "The family sector, represented by the Family Empowerment Department, encourages and supports innovative and creative Qatari youth in all fields.” She also indicates that this event is held within the framework of keenness to achieve the Ministry's vision. It also directs the efforts of institutions concerned with women and the family economically, encouraging self-reliance, and the development and implementation of projects to support and develop entrepreneurs through training and provision of auxiliary services, as well as providing areas for marketing their products.

The national productive projects "From the Homeland" are one of the most important strategies of the family sector in the Ministry to provide protection for some families that are based on this production: food products, crafts, and arts.  While the success of these projects prompt young entrepreneurs and families to repeat them and search for pioneering ideas to develop them, it is considered that the participation of the Ministry with such activities provides a great opportunity for families to present their home projects, and to acquaint the public who go to MIA Garden with the most important products that bear the identity of these projects: "From the Homeland”.

Moreover, the participation of national production projects extends to include several activities in various parts of the country, aiming to introduce members of society to the identity of national products from the homeland. The Ministry of Social Development and Family also seeks to unify joint efforts to enhance awareness and knowledge among the various members of society, and to work on concerted efforts. This is to attract community members to participate in such projects, which are considered a cultural platform in promoting interaction between the individual and society.

Mr. Salem Al-Aswad, the Deputy Director and Director of Education and Community Awareness Department of the Museum, said, "Within the framework of cooperation between the Ministry and the Museum, we are pleased to host a bazaar “From the Homeland” for national projects in the Museum of Islamic Art Garden, with the support of Qatar Museums for project owners and promotion. This cooperation includes various programs, including seminars and training courses, and various activities will be presented during the exhibition, such as direct drawing, training workshops for children in the Museum Garden, and various educational programs inside the Museum. We hope that this cooperation will continue an annual basis.”

The garden of the Museum of Islamic Art was chosen to hold the exhibition, as the garden provides an attractive environment for visitors throughout the year. This was achieved through its sporting, cinematic and artistic workshops, in addition to its outdoor cafes and temporary markets.

The museum was established in 2008 and it is the first project launched by Qatar Museums. It was designed by the world-famous Chinese American engineer I.M. Pei in which his designs are inspired by traditional Islamic architectural lines. The museum has a panoramic view of the waterfront of the city of Doha, as it rises majestically from the water. It also displays the Qatar International Collection of Islamic Art, which includes contents dating back some 1,400 years.

These contents vary between manuscripts, ceramic, metal, glass, ivory, wooden and precious stones. They are holdings belonging to three continents and include different countries from India to Spain to the countries of the Middle East. These holdings date back to the period from the seventh century AD until the twentieth century. The Museum’s program is diverse and constantly evolving. It also organizes extended educational activities for children and families, making the Museum a vital part of the community. MIA has gained wide popularity in the region and the world and attracts thousands of visitors every year. Dr. Julia Gonnella has been the director of the museum since 2017.
