Qatar Launches "Purple Saturday" Initiative to Boost Inclusion of Persons with Disabilities

In a significant step towards reinforcing the nation's commitment to inclusivity and empowering all segments of society, Qatar's Ministry of Social Development and Family, in collaboration with the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and Qatar Tourism, has launched the inaugural "Purple Saturday" initiative. This annual event, set to take place on the last Saturday of July, aims to support and empower persons with disabilities by highlighting their rights and encouraging commercial and service establishments to provide a more inclusive and accessible environment.

The initiative extends a Gulf-wide endeavor first launched in Saudi Arabia in 2021, subsequently expanding to include several GCC countries. This expansion underscores a unified Gulf vision to promote dignity and equal opportunities for all community members, particularly persons with disabilities.

"Purple Saturday" seeks to create a tangible impact through collaboration between the public and private sectors. This year, over 16 of Qatar Tourism's partners, including shops and hotels, are participating, offering exclusive deals and services from July 26 to August 1, 2025. Holders of the initiative's digital card will be able to avail themselves of these benefits.

Qatar Tourism also announced the integration of Purple Saturday activities into the Qatar Gaming Festival, one of this summer's premier events. This integration will grant free entry to persons with disabilities throughout the festival, a move that reflects the synergy between cultural and tourism activities and the social dimension, emphasizing national institutions' commitment to achieving universal accessibility.

In this context, Reem Al-Ajmi, Director of Community Care Department at the Ministry of Social Development and Family, underscored the initiative's importance as a practical model for embodying community empowerment values. "Purple Saturday is not just an awareness campaign; it is a vivid expression of the state's commitment to providing an environment that allows all citizens and residents to enjoy their full rights," she stated. "Through this initiative, we seek to enhance community awareness of disability issues, broaden participation circles, and support national efforts that uphold human dignity and equality. This is part of an integrated approach adopted by the Ministry in cooperation with its partners in both the public and private sectors."

Dr. Mohammed Mubarak Al-Amri, Director of the Qualitative Licenses and Market Control Department at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, affirmed that "Purple Saturday" represents a qualitative step towards fostering the integration and empowerment of persons with disabilities. He noted that the initiative provides offers allowing them a more accessible and comfortable shopping and service experience, including the launch of exclusive digital cards enabling them to benefit from special privileges within the initiative's activities.

Dr. Al-Amri explained that the initiative, scheduled annually for the last Saturday of July, aims to actively engage the commercial sector. Companies and establishments can register through the Ministry of Commerce and Industry's Single Window portal to become true partners in supporting and empowering persons with disabilities.

He further pointed out that the initiative's objectives extend beyond offering deals; they also aim to raise community awareness about the importance of providing welcoming and accessible environments for persons with disabilities in various tourism and commercial facilities. He highlighted the wide participation of commercial complexes, reflecting their eagerness to fulfill their role and social responsibility.

Dr. Al-Amri urged commercial establishments to participate in the initiative and offer their best deals and discounts from July 26 to August 1.

Dr. Buthaina Al-Janahi, Senior Manager of Media and Communications at Visit Qatar, commented, "Visit Qatar is pleased to be part of the Purple Saturday event in Qatar, a step that reflects our continuous commitment to making our community a more inclusive and welcoming destination for all. Through collaboration with public and private sector partners, we aim to support efforts to raise awareness, improve accessibility, and enhance community interaction. Such initiatives emphasize the importance of cross-sector cooperation in building inclusive and sustainable experiences that benefit all members of society."

This initiative is closely linked to Qatar National Vision 2030, which serves as the overarching strategic framework for the nation's sustainable development path. The Vision, based on human, social, economic, and environmental development pillars, clearly calls for building a cohesive, just, and equitable society that guarantees the rights of all its members, including persons with disabilities. Therefore, the launch of "Purple Saturday" represents a tangible contribution to achieving the Vision's goals by promoting principles of social justice, equal opportunities, community empowerment, and positive interaction between individuals and institutions.

The Ministry has also sent SMS messages to persons with disabilities or their guardians, containing the digital card for Purple Saturday. This card allows holders to benefit from the offers provided during the specified period and serves as an important organizational tool that facilitates interaction with the initiative, reflecting the principle of digital empowerment.

The choice of purple as the initiative's identity is significant, as it combines strength, wisdom, humility, and sensitivity. It is a universal color used to represent various types of disabilities and embodies values of respect, appreciation, tranquility, and solidarity. This initiative is part of broader state efforts to empower persons with disabilities to participate fully and effectively in social and economic life and in shaping policies that affect their lives.
