MSDF Organizes Workshop to Preserve Cultural Crafts
In line with its ongoing efforts to support traditional crafts and enhance family empowerment programs, the MSDF, represented by the Family Empowerment Department, is organizing a training workshop titled "Preserving Cultural Crafts – the Naqda Craft." The workshop will be held at the Museum of Islamic Art from May 4th to 19th, 2025, between 4:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
This initiative is part of the Ministry's programs aimed at empowering Home-Grown Families and developing the skills of those working in family empowerment. This is achieved through collaboration with relevant entities and the implementation of training projects that support the preservation of cultural heritage and contribute to providing support services that open new horizons for participants.
The workshop will highlight the Naqda craft, considered an important traditional craft in Qatari culture. It will cover the concept of Naqda, its history, and its cultural significance. Additionally, it will explain the conventional tools and fabrics used in this craft and showcase examples of related designs and decorations. The workshop will also include practical training on how to use Naqda in embroidering the "Milfa" (women's headcover) and "Bukhnag" (a type of scarf), to enable trainees to integrate this craft into contemporary designs such as Abayas and souvenirs, thereby enhancing marketing and sustainable production opportunities.
In this context, Ms. Fatima Al Nuaimi, Director of the Family Empowerment Department at the MSDF, stated that the workshop aims to train participants to become professional artisans and empower owners of productive projects by attracting and training new individuals interested in learning the Naqda craft. She added, "We aspire for the workshop to achieve its desired goals by enabling trainees to establish new production projects with a modern and developed approach that blends Qatari heritage with contemporary design, to be marketed in exhibitions and marketing outlets affiliated with the MSDF."
It is worth noting that the Family Affairs sector at the MSDF seeks to achieve the Qatar National Vision 2030 by providing a sustainable environment for national productive project owners and supporting and encouraging development initiatives in coordination with relevant authorities. This includes guiding and facilitating the efforts of the private sector and civil society organizations to establish or fund development projects that contribute to the economic and social empowerment of individuals and families.
