The Ministry of Social Development and Family, represented by the Community Care Department, in cooperation with Hamad Medical Corporation, organized an educational lecture entitled World Alzheimer’s Day, which falls on September 21st of each year.
This awareness lecture covered several topics, including introducing Alzheimer's disease, the factors that cause the disease and how to prevent it, the services available to Alzheimer's patients at Hamad Medical Corporation, the importance of maintaining healthy food, and presenting real-life stories of cases of Alzheimer's patients.
Dr. Maryam Al-Obaidly, Senior Consultant in Geriatrics, knew about Alzheimer’s disease, which is a group of symptoms that may include memory loss, difficulties in thinking and solving problems, in addition to difficulties in language, pointing out that dementia occurs when the brain is damaged due to diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease. Or a series of strokes. Most types of dementia have similar symptoms, such as memory loss, problems with thinking, planning, and language, failure to recognize objects and people, and mood and personality changes.
Dr. Al Obaidli stressed the importance of maintaining public health and periodic follow-up of chronic diseases with the doctor, practicing sports activities, and eating healthy meals, as well as maintaining social communication with parents and moving away from isolation. If some symptoms are observed such as frequent forgetfulness, the person must go to the doctor for appropriate medical evaluation.
Mrs. Reem Al-Ajmi, Director of the Ministry’s Community Care Department, indicated that annual activities held on this day through lectures and workshops coincided with World Alzheimer’s Day. The Ministry seeks to activate events to educate individuals about the nature of Alzheimer's disease and care for the elderly in health, psychological, social, and physical terms.
Hamad Medical Corporation provides a "comfort" service and a national helpline to provide support and consultations to Alzheimer's patients and their family members while ensuring confidentiality and privacy. Those wishing to contact the National Helpline Number 40262222 from 8 am to 3 pm, Sunday to Thursday to provide their inquiries about Alzheimer's disease or memory loss.
The organization of this event is an operationalization of the competence of the Ministry's Community Welfare Department to implement national strategies, plans, and policies for older persons, and to raise society's awareness of family and social challenges and issues, their impact, and ways of preventing them.
