The 42nd session of the Arab Women's Committee convenes with the participation of the State of Qatar

The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States held a two-day meeting for the work of the 42nd session of the Arab Women's Committee at the ministerial level, with the participation of the State of Qatar. The State of Qatar's delegation was headed by Mrs. Najat Daham Al-Abdullah, Director of the Family Affairs Department at the Ministry of Social Development and Family.

In a statement today, the League of Arab States stated that the work of the 42nd session of the Committee dealt with some issues on the empowerment of women and the advancement of their conditions at the Arab level, the most important of which is the preparation for the work of the 67th session of the Committee on the Status of Women at the United Nations, and the launch of the results of the first regional review of the agenda for the development of women in the Arab region.

She stated that the work of the 42nd session of the committee also dealt with regional and international cooperation in the field of promoting and empowering women, as well as following up on the implementation of the joint regional initiative with the United Nations Women’s Organization on the economic empowerment of women in the green economy, in addition to women’s issues, security, peace and combating terrorism, and the Arab Network for Women. Peace mediators, and the fight against violence against women, noting the keenness to hold meetings of the Arab Women's Committee at the beginning of February of each year, coinciding with Arab Women's Day, which falls on the first of February, and based on the Arab League's keenness to pay attention to issues of women's rights and empowerment.

Considering the committee's work, the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States held a preparatory meeting via visual communication technology, to discuss the draft Arab statement, which will be presented in the work of the 67th session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations. The statement is titled "Innovation, Technological Change, and Education in the Digital Age to Achieve Gender Equality and Empower All Women and Girls."

The League of Arab States pointed out that the convening of this preparatory meeting came in cooperation with the regional office of the United Nations Women’s Organization for the Arab States. It was under the chairmanship of Iraq, the current chair of the committee, and with the participation of ministers and heads of national mechanisms concerned with women’s affairs from eighteen Arab countries, to come up with an Arab vision for the advancement of Arab women countries by working to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls.

For her part, Ambassador Haifa Abu Ghazala, Assistant Secretary-General and Head of the Social Affairs Sector of the League of Arab States, appreciated the joint Arab effort to enrich the Arab statement issued at the meeting, and the interest in the situation of women’s issues in situations of asylum, displacement and under occupation in the context of technology, and women with disabilities, especially Visual impairment, as well as adaptation to climate change and environmental disasters in the context of the digital age. She stressed the importance of linking the issue of gender equality and achieving peace and security in the context of technology, especially considering the development of a new program for peace at the international level in preparation for the future summit.
